Grand United Order of Salem
WHO WE ARE
The Grand United Order of Salem is a historic African American fraternal and benevolent fellowship dedicated to Virtue, Peace, and Union.
Rooted in the mutual-aid traditions of Black communities in North Carolina, the Order unites Brothers and Sisters in service to one another and to humanity. Its mission is to preserve its heritage while strengthening youth, honoring elders, supporting families, advancing education, protecting African American culture, relieving hardship, and building peaceful, stable, and prosperous communities.
The modern revival of the Grand United Order of Salem seeks to restore the Order as a benevolent fellowship devoted to social connection, mutual aid, community service, and diverse civic engagement. It is not intended merely to preserve the name, ceremonies, and symbols of the past. Its greater purpose is to continue the historic work of Salem by applying its principles to the present needs of Black individuals, families, and communities.
